Things have been a bit quiet around here. In fact I don’t think I have ever gone this long without publishing something on this little website. Working freelance, and more specifically working as a blogger affords me the luxury of almost endless liberty when it comes to how I manage my time – I can balance my work with my social life so that, within reason, I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. Equally, I have to be self-motivated, or I end up relaxing myself out of a job. If I am not doing anything, I am not being paid and I am not giving you, readers, what you come here for, which isn’t fair. Taking time off for no reason other than because I want it also presents its own dilemma when it comes to then *needing* time off. So I’ve been on holiday; I spent nine nights in New York, had a really nice time. I came home, saw friends, then once the weekend was over and I was ready to get my head down again, one of my friends in Manchester was killed. Now, in the immediate aftermath, I can’t make posting on the internet my priority.
I didn’t completely forgo ‘work’ while I was in New York; my brain was still switched onto ~content~ (wow!), doing plenty of twitter and instagram, taking pictures and making mental notes for things to include in an upcoming post about the city and staying in Brooklyn, and taking these extremely great and serious photos of an outfit I wore on a day where the temperature (in February) somehow reached 16 degrees celsius. But I did not sit down with my laptop to do anything other than find an embarrassing emo playlist to listen to on Spotify while we got ready to go out.
I felt better for taking a break, for not rushing like mad to get posts published the second I landed, for taking time to work on things in between catching up with friends and sleeping off jet lag. Now I know I have to get back to work, but I also need to prioritise healing and giving time to my friends. And yes I do realise that I’m dressed like Andrew WK, party hard.

I’m sorry to hear about your friend, it makes perfect sense that blogging isn’t the priority, and I’m pretty sure all your readers would say the same thing. Hope you’re okay, and that you had a great time in New York!x
