The Monthly Playlist: July

This month I was introduced to one of the most exciting bands I have heard in a long time, Dublin’s Fontaines DC; FFO post-punk, smart, articulate and vital lyricism, and the Irish accent, I would strongly recommend taking 26 minutes to watch their full KEXP session. Alongside Fontaines, this month’s playlist features English post-punk favourites IDLES and their latest single ‘Samaritans’, in which frontman Joe addresses toxic masculinity; rowdy Australian ‘pub punks’ Amyl and the Sniffers (amyl nitrate is the chemical name for poppers, do with that information what you will); a new song from my old favourites Alkaline Trio; and a particularly personally affecting new one, ‘I Dreamt We Spoke Again’, from Death Cab For Cutie ahead of the release of their new album next month.

I have also been working on my DJ set for the launch of Polyester’s eighth issue this week, which led me down a hole of techno mixes and remixes of indie and punk hits (lol, sorry) and thus the discovery of Erol Alkan’s mix of ‘Five Ways to End It’ and ‘Fulwood Babylon’ by The Long Blondes – come see my play one or both of those on Thursday! ‘RIP to the club cause we walk in and kill it’ from Charli XCX’s new one ‘Girls Night Out’ is a lyrical highlight of this month, Flohio released another absolute ripper called ‘Watchout’, and I am grateful to have been introduced to Natalie Prass and her beautiful pop album The Future and the Past.
