The Monthly Playlist: September

September has been a ride. The end of festival season (more on that to follow), the start of colder weather, and my birthday month. Not only am I now legally old enough to work with alcohol brands on sponsored content now (get in!), this year I went to New York City for my actual birthday and managed to get enough friends to spread over two lanes at bowling to come out for London birthday party, which for someone whose birthday plans usually involve choosing an event that is already happening and claiming it as my own celebration, is quite the achievement and it made me feel very nice and appreciated and grateful.

In New York I saw Bristol band IDLES smash the Music Hall of Williamsburg for the first time since the release of Joy as an Act of Resistance, in Berlin for Bread && Butter I saw Octavian and SOPHIE, and at home I saw Alex G, Fontaines DC (who I blabbed about here), Soccer Mommy, Mitski and Pale Waves, all of whom were excellent. PLUS, Aled of Kids In Glass Houses treated us to a rendition of Give Me What I Want at Zoe and George’s wedding, reaffirming that no matter how much I love new music, nothing will ever come close to 2008.

The re-emergence of Lana Del Rey this month has been a real treat, ‘Venice Bitch’ is perhaps my favourite track of hers since Born to Die, and I have loved new albums from Pale Waves, Octavian and boy band of the moment BROCKHAMPTON. Cat Power covered Rihanna, Camp Cope’s Georgia Maq featured on an emotive new Wicca Phase track, Marianne Faithful and Nick Cave did a new song together, Yaeji remixed Charli xcx, and both ‘In-N-Out’ by Ariel and ‘Lilo’ by The Japanese House are perfect pop songs for moods sitting somewhere between happy and sad.
