In my line of work, I am on the receiving end of a near constant stream of clothes. It is easy therefore to feel a little disenchanted with the idea of new clothes, free or otherwise; I do not get as excited about the simple idea of getting stuff as I once did. I do appreciate that this is a very nice ‘problem’ to have, but it seems a shame nonetheless.
Every now and again I find a piece that is an exception to my usual nonchalance, something that makes my heart race a bit, a garment that makes me feel good. This green faux leather coat from Topshop is the latest of these such pieces. I tried it on in store and walked away from it, slightly heartbroken, because I was short on cash and absolutely not short on coats. But it plagued my thoughts and haunted my daydreams, and so eventually I placed the order. I love that it does not really look like anything else from Topshop, that it could almost be a dream vintage piece. I love the clash with my hair colour and the fact that it catches eyes as I walk down the street. I love that it makes me feel powerful and confident. It is so easy to forget how powerful clothes are as a tool for self-expression and self-confidence, and I love that this coat has reminded me.
