‘Debauched garden party’ inspired the Topshop Beauty make-up, Smash Hits hair heroes inspired the L’Oreal Professionnel hair, and the fashion took 80s power dressing and ran with it, but the common thread tying together all aspects of Topshop Unique SS16 is individuality. No two girls are the same and so to pay tribute to that, each Topshop model’s uniqueness was celebrated rather than toned down.
The make-up was ‘lived in’; ready to go out but not perfect and precise. Eyelids were shimmery and almost wet looking with Topshop’s Chameleon Glow eyeshadow, black was smudged into each lashline, mascara was a little messy, and a slightly imprecise matte red lip (using a Topshop lip bullet) made the look altogether more striking.
L’Oreal Professionnel’s Anthony Turner took inspiration from a teenage girl listening to her favourite pop star in her bedroom and wanting to look like her, as well as from his own personal hair heroes. The models sported looks based on hair icons from Debbie Harry to Grace Jones, and Whitney Houston to Kate Moss, without sacrificing their own individuality.
Techniques varied from girl to girl, but L’Oreal Professionnel Pli and Volume Mousse were the base products used to achieve the 2 or 3 days post-wash texture; not too dishevelled but not pristine either. I particularly love this hair trend because it has validated my aversion to frequent hair washing. The vision wasn’t necessarily grunge-y, and so in order to promote a little quality L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil was used to finish off each style.
All in all, Topshop Unique SS16 is an optimistic and fun celebration of individuality; one big mash-up of different ideas that just felt right when brought together.
